The Dance Chicago Choreographic
Advancement Program
The Dance Chicago Choreographic Advancement Program
(DCCAP) works like this:
Year 1. Young talent is identified through
viewing videotape submissions from December through July. The choreographers
are given opportunities to present their work in one /or both Dance Chicago
programs: Dance Slam or New Dances.
Year 2. The next stage is the mentoring
stage, where the young talent is coached and partnered with professionals
in the field to refine their choreographic potential. The choreographers
are given opportunities to present their work in one of the main Dance Chicago
programs, such as Jazz Rhythms, Dance for Kids, Finale, Encore, etc.
Year 3. The next stage is the professional
commissioning stage, called the Dance Chicago Choreography Project, where
the young choreographer is given the resources to create a dance for the
repertory of Hubbard Street 2, River North Chicago Dance Company, Gus Giordano
Jazz Dance Chicago, Melissa Thodos and Dancers, or the Joffrey Ballet of
Chicago.
Year 4. The next stage is the international
professional commissioning stage, called the International Choreography Exchange
Program, where the young choreographer is given the resources to create a
dance for the repertory of a company from another country. This year we are
working with the Dutch National Ballet, the Albanian Academy of Dance, and
Cemal Resit Rey Dance Theatre from Turkey.
Keep in mind this is the "fast track" some may have to spend more
than one year in each of the first two stages. In the last two stages, some
chorographers are creating works simultaneously for Chicago companies and
international companies.
We would love to have you get involved with us. To identify and support
a young artist through the four years, cost us about $20,000, with most of
the money coming in year 3, where the burden is on us to fully produce the
work, which comes to $10,000 per choreographer. Whith all this in mind, obviously
any contribution will help us continue.
